Nigeria Set To Become Africa’s ICT Hub

Nigeria Set To Become Africa’s ICT Hub

“We have a vision to be the ICT hub for Africa– to make Nigeria the ‘go to’ place for innovation, skills, research and development, tech companies etc. The journey to this vision is as challenging as it is exciting and I hope that I have been able to ignite your interest to join us and support us in this endeavour.”
 — Those were the words of Omobola Johnson, the Minister of Communication Technology, who said that deliberate efforts are underway to raise local content in the Nigerian ICT sector where over 70 per cent is controlled by foreigners.
According to the Minister, international companies control 70 per cent of Nigeria’s PC market and 100 per cent of the mobile phone market, while more than 70 per cent of the mobile network operators are owned by foreign companies. Omobola Johnson, Minister of Communication Technology
.
The Minister made the observation at the just-concluded Nigeria Summit organised by The Economist, the latest growth in the Nigerian ICT sector is equally sustainable. She said the growth could be combined and leveraged to deliver on the transformational opportunities in Nigeria while noting that “with the exception of a couple of sub-sectors, the 26 sub-sectors that make up the ICT sector are positioned for high to medium growth and in turn have high to medium capacity to create jobs and wealth.” She said that there are four laid-down priorities being pursued by government: Connect Nigeria, Connect Nigerians, Local Content and ICT in governance.
“Focusing on these four priorities will enable us deliver a digital revolution that will be broader, deeper and much more impactful than the telecoms revolution that we are ever so proud of,” the CommTech Minister adds.
She further clarified the issue of misinterpretaion by the public “Now please don’t get me wrong, the presence of international companies is necessary and it is a good thing especially in a sector as global and advanced as the ICT sector but when it gets to a point where companies owned by Nigerians are playing at the fringes of a very lucrative and fast growing market, then government has to intervene and we have done this is a very purposeful and deliberate manner”, Johnson said.

Tips To Improve System Speed

Is your PC always slowing down? It must be frustrating when you try to use your PC for simple tasks and it gives slow responses. Here are some tips to ease your PC of excess loads which may be affecting its booting speed

1. Let your PC boot up completely before opening any applications.

2. Refresh the desktop after closing any application. This will remove any unused files from the RAM.

3. Do not set very large file size images as your wallpaper. Do not keep a wallpaper at all if your PC is low on RAM (less than 64 MB).

4. Do not clutter your Desktop with a lot of shortcuts. Each shortcut on the desktop uses up to 500 bytes of RAM

5. Empty the recycle bin regularly. The files are not really deleted from your hard drive until you empty the recycle bin.

6. Delete the temporary internet files regularly.

7. Defragment your hard drive once every two months. This will free up a lot of space on your hard drive and rearrange the files so that your applications run faster. To defragment your hard drive go to my computer icon on the desktop and right click it then go to manage options, there you will see "Disk defragmenter". Click it then analyze and defrag your drives. You can also defrag your drives using third party software like AVG PC tools,Disk Defragmenter etc.

8. Always make two partitions in your hard drive. Install all large Softwares (like PSP, Photoshop, 3DS Max etc) in the second partition. Windows uses all the available empty space in C drive as virtual memory when your Computer RAM is full. Keep the C Drive as empty as possible.

9. When installing new Softwares disable the option of having a tray icon. The tray icons use up available RAM, and also slow down the booting of your PC. Also disable the option of starting the application automatically when the PC boots. You can disable these options later on also from the Tools or preferences menu in your application.

10. Protect your PC from dust. Dust causes the CPU cooling fan to jam and slow down thereby gradually heating your CPU and affecting the processing speed. Use compressed air to blow out any dust from the CPU. Never use vacuum.

Predicted Features To Be On The Next Whatsapp Update

Predicted Features To Be On The Next Whatsapp Update

Few days ago, my WhatsApp failed to send nor receive messages. I could only come to a conclusion that Facebook had started their business. It’s obvious that there will be modifications or changes on our favourite instant messaging app, but we are not sure of what changes will be made. Before thinking of ditching or getting over excited for WhatsApp here are a few changes or predicted features that might be applied on WhatsApp.

Addition of some privacy features:
Of course we all know how Mack loves his privacy, I’m not too sure in what part of WhatsApp this feature is going to be in but I’m quite sure there will be some sort of privacy settings on the next update on WhatsApp

Integration of WhatsApp messages on facebook.com:
This is one feature I’m most certainly sure will happen, users will be able to go through their Facebook messages on WhatsApp and likewise. We also will be able to send messages to Facebook from WhatsApp.

Theme Colour:
The green theme colour and all then other minimalistic background designs on WhatsApp might all phase away. We all know Facebook loves the blue colour with a touch of miniature imagery. That will be applied on WhatsApp as they desire.

Ads supported, of course:
This I’m also very sure of, definitely WhatsApp will start displaying ads, after all that’s what the Facebook team does best.

Integration of WhatsApp user profile with both Facebook and Instagram:
WhatsApp has only been allowed to upload one profile picture at a time without saving it for later viewing, those of you using WhatsApp know what I mean. But with the integration of Instagram, photos of both you and friends can be viewed at anytime anywhere.

IM messaging with Instagram followers:
About a million people have already downloaded the app “insta-message” on the Playstore, but the truth we all know is that it doesn’t work. No developer has cone up with a solution to integrate Instagram with an IM. Now with the purchase of WhatsApp that will seem to come into reality.

Special WhatsApp package plans for small and large businesses.:
Just the way Facebook for business was launched, and how businesses choose to use Twitter as a good marketing platform, the same will be applied on WhatsApp, and this time around it might just be termed, WhatsApp for business smiley. No better name for it.

How To Search Like A Pro On Google

The internet is a vast sea of information, therefore to get the most out of Google search, you must instruct the search engine to bring exactly what you want. Since Google is the largest search engine in the world, i'll share with you some tricks on how to search like a pro on Google.

1. Use of Quotation Marks and Key Phrases
When looking for something on Google, envelope the key word with quotation marks to instruct the search engine to bring all about what you searching for. For example if you type in"Reebok", search engine would bring all about Reebok and nothing else.

2. Time Range Search

If you want to know about the NFL between 2011 to 2014 for example your search would look like this NFL 2011...2014. This would instruct the search engine to bring up all about the NFL between 2011 and 2014.

3. Document Type Search
If you are looking for a particular file type say a PDF file for example you can instruct Google to look for PDF files on Technology by typing in "Filetype: PDF Technology". For word file replace PDF with docx, for PowerPoint files put in ppt, for excel type in xls.

4. Inclusive Search
If you want search engine to bring up two terms in the search, like Apple and Mac for example, just type Apple OR Mac.

5. Searching for Word Definition
You don't need to type a word on Google and start looking for dictionary definition on dictionary sites. To get a definition on Google just type "define: word" and the definition would pop up on top page.
