10 Things You Don't Know About Yaya Toure

Known for his versatility and power on the field, professional footballer Yaya Touré has made a pretty big name for himself in recent years. The African Footballer of the Year three years in a row (2011, 2012, and 2013), the Ivory Coast and Manchester City player is popular among European football fans and Ivorians back home. Touré has been an integral part of the Côte d’Ivoire national team for nearly a decade. But beyond his phenomenal playing ability, here are 10 things you didn’t know about footballer Yaya Touré.
En.Wikipedia.org

1. Touré Got His First Pair Of Football Boots At The Age Of 10:
As a natural talent, he played football with friends and family in the streets of Abidjan from a young age. He soon followed in his older brother Kolo’s footsteps to become a key player for the local youth team, ASEC Mimosas.

2. He Is A Practicing Muslim:
Frequently named Man of the Match during his time in the Premier League, Touré has turned down the English tradition of champagne after league games in accordance with his religious beliefs.

3. He Almost Joined Arsenal In 2003:
While playing for the Belgian team, Beveren, Touré trialed with Arsenal in 2003. While the manager was interested in signing him, he had difficulties getting a work permit to play in England. Rather than waiting, Touré took a contract with the Ukrainian team Metalurh Donetsk instead, where he played for more than a year.

4. Both Of His Brothers Are Professional Footballers:
Most are familiar with older brother Kolo Touré, Yaya’s teammate both on the Côte d’Ivoire national team and Manchester City, before Kolo was transferred to Liverpool in 2013. Few may be able to name Yaya’s younger brother, Ibrahim Touré, however, who plays for Al-Safa Sporting Club in Lebanon.

5. He’s Been Known To Give PUMA Kits To Children In West Africa:
A spokesman for the athletic company Puma, Yaya has never forgotten his roots and frequently donates gear to children in need back in Côte d’Ivoire and other countries in West Africa, among his other charitable endeavors.

6. He Clashed With AS Monaco Manager, László Bölöni:
When Yaya moved to play for the French Ligue 1 side AS Monaco in 2006, he initially had issues with the manager, László Bölöni. Bölöni wouldn’t put Touré at the midfield position where he had played the majority of his career and proven himself. He was sacked in the middle of the season as Monaco was performing poorly.

7. He Is One Of The Few Midfielders To Win African Footballer Of The Year:
Before Yaya’s first African Footballer of the Year award in 2011, the previous 12 years’ awards had gone to African forwards. As forwards receive more scoring opportunities, they occupy higher-profile positions on the field and receive recognition more often.

8. He Has A History Of Being Targeted By Racist Mobs:
Yaya has commented several times on his love of playing football in England, where racist mobs targeting black players is a rare occurrence. The worst incidents occurred while he was playing in Portugal and Moscow.

9. Touré Is Known For Staying Behind After Training Each Day:
A strong believer that practice makes perfect, Yaya stays behind after practice in order to continue to improve his free-kick technique in particular.

10. He Is A Goodwill Ambassador For The U.N. Environment Program:
After joining a campaign against elephant poaching in October, Yaya was named a goodwill ambassador for the U.N. and helps to raise awareness about the problem, along with other environmental issues.

Flamingos Crash Out Of FIFA U-17 World Cup

Flamingoes lose to Spain
Nigeria lost 3-0 to Spain in the quarter final game of the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup played at the Estadio Edgardo Baltodano, Liberia on Friday morning.
A brace from Patri Guijarro plus one from Nahikari Garcia were all the Europeans needed to book a place in the semi final of the competition at the expense of Bala Nikyu’s side as the Nigerians once agains failed to make it past the quarters.
Nikyu's team were second best for most of the game and lacked the bite to open up the Spanish defence while the Europeans easily found space in the Nigerian area.
Jorge Vilda’s girls took the lead in the 14th minute from the penalty spot after Andrea Falcon was brought down by Ugochi Emenayo inside the area of the Flamingoes.

Guijarro made no mistake in slotting home the resulting kick despite goalkeeper Onyinyechukwu Okeke guessing the right direction.
The Flamingoes could have equalised but Uchenna Kanu’s cross from the left side of the Spanish backline was made a mess of by captain Chinwe Ihezuo who failed to convert from close range despite needing just a simple tap to get her side back into contention.
Garcia and Laura Dominguez were prevented from putting the Europeans ahead in the closing stages of the first half by goalkeeper Okeke who was by far the busier of the two shot-stoppers.
Spain continued their dominance on restart of the second half and got their reward when Garcia doubled her side's lead. Dominguez set her up with a sublime pass before holding off a Nigeria defender and beating the advancing goalkeeper.
Guijarro completed her brace in the 71st minute by forcing the ball past Okeke who spilt her save following a ferocious strike from Sandra Herndandez.
The result ended a seven-match unbeaten run for Nigeria at the tournament dating back to 2012, and fell one match short of the record sequence established by Japan between 2010 and 2012.
Spain will play Italy, who eliminated Ghana, in the semi final on Monday while Venezuela and Japan will contest the other game.

Chelsea Meets Inter-Milan Over Mikel Deal

Inter are reportedly leading the chase for the Nigerian, with sources saying Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund, Wolfsburg and Valencia also interested.

Inter though, are in the fore front of the race to sign the Nigerian, and they reinforced that position by sending representatives to London to meet with Chelsea after Tuesday's Champions League game.

But John Shittu, who represents the player, told KickOffNigeria.com it was all speculation.

"As far as we are concerned, this is all speculation. Of course it is normal for clubs to show interest," Shittu said.

"But the player has not said he wants to leave, and the club has not said they want him to go.

"There is always contact all the time from different clubs here and there, but he still has three years left on his contract."

World Cup Slots: NFF Earmarks N138m For Aki, Pawpaw

Following the discovery of the $800,000 (about N138.4 million) the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has set aside to sponsor 10 Nigerians in the entertainment industry to cheer the Super Eagles during the 2014 FIFA World Cup, Nollywood stars have turned the Glass House to a Mecca of some sort to lobby to be among the beneficiaries.

In the financial plan presented to the National Assembly, the NFF had revealed its decision to invite the duo of Chinedu Ikedieze and Osita Iheme, popularly called Aki and Pawpaw and eight other Nigerians in the entertainment industry for the world football fiesta in June.

Although sources at the federation told Daily Sunsports in confidence that the federation has been receiving several calls from Nollywood stars indicating interest in joining the diminutive duo, others took the bull by the horn by storming the Glass House yesterday to parley with management.

The federation yesterday received in audience four Nollywood stars who allegedly came to make case for themselves

Confirming the high-powered lobbying, our source explained that the Nollywood stars stormed the office of the General Secretary, Barrister Musa Amadu for a brief discussion before meeting with the Director of Competition Dr. Salisu Mohammed.

Flamingoes Secure Quarter Final Ticket At Fifa U-17 Women’s World Cup

Nigeria came from a goal down to beat Colombia 2-1 in their second game of the Fifa U17 Women’s World Cup played at the Estadio Alejandro Morera in Alajuela on Thursday morning.
Goals from Joy Bokiri and Uchenna Kanu propelled the Flamingoes to victory after the Colombians had taken the lead in the third minute through Angie Rodriguez.
Fabian Tarborda’s girls needed a win against the Africans to stand any chance of progressing to the last eight of the competition after losing 4-0 to Mexico in their first game. They did not disappoint as they raced into the lead three minutes after kick off.
Nancy Acosta's well tailored cross reached Rodriguez who headed past a trapped goalkeeper Onyinyechukwu Okeke for the curtain raiser.
Knowing the imminent danger ahead, the Flamingoes stepped up their game and dominated every department of the match and soon got the deserved equaliser in the 26th minute with Bokiri curling in a free-kick from the edge of the penalty area.

Nkiyu’s girls could have doubled their lead few minutes later but Ihuoma Onyebuchi’s effort from distance rattled the opponents' crossbar. Nigeria continued to dominate but their major undoing was poor finishing coupled with master saves by Colombia’s goalkeeper Monica Florez who was superb in goal for the South Americans.
Kanu ensured Nigeria secured maximum points when her strike 14 minutes into the second half condemned the Colombians to their second defeat of the competition.
Despite posting a five-star performance, the duo of Ihuoma Onyebuchi and Ayomide Anibaba were cautioned by referee Mirian Leon of Slovenia and must avoid being booked again in Nigeria’s last group game else they will miss the quarter final.
Nigeria face Mexico to fight for top place in the group in their last group game scheduled for Monday 3am (Nigeria time) at the Estadio Nacional de Costa Rica in San Jose. The Mexicans had earlier in the day spanked China PR 4-0 to reach the quarter final of the competition.

Mikel May Leave Chelsea This Summer

Mikel May Leave Chelsea This Summer

John Mikel Obi's days at Chelsea could be numbered as the club look set to offload the Nigeria international at the end of the season.

According to reports in England, Blues boss Jose Mourinho has informed Mikel he can leave the side for a small fee this summer.

The Premier League giants have already started looking for Mikel's replacement, with Olympique Marseille's Gianelli Imbula identified as a potential successor.

Mikel has become unsettled at Chelsea since the return of Mourinho to west London.

The midfielder, who was earlier linked with a move to Galatasary and AS Monaco, has fallen further down the pecking order at Stamford Bridge following the January arrival of Nemanja Matic.

Nigeria Vs Mexico- Match Preview

Nigeria will face Mexico in a friendly in the United States on 5 March in their build-up to the Brazil World Cup.

Super Eagles of Nigeria will face the Mexican National football team on the 5th of May.
The match will be held at the Georgia Dome Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia.
It will be the second time in 10 months that the sides have met in a friendly in the US - they played out a 2-2 draw in Houston on 31 May.
"This is the first big friendly for the Super Eagles on the road to Brazil," Nigeria Football Federation spokesman Ademola Olajire told BBC Sport".
With both countries preparing for the World Cup and playing in front of large Nigerian and Mexican crowd, it should spark a great atmosphere in Atlanta.
It's clear that if Nigeria is to prepare well for Brazil, they need to start playing against strong teams.
"The organisers have gone an extra mile to make this happen because both nations will be competing against teams with similar football culture in the summer, so this should help."
Nigeria face Argentina, Iran and Bosnia-Herzegovina in Group F at the 2014 World Cup, while Mexico play in group A against hosts and five-time winners Brazil, Croatia and Cameroon.
The reigning African champions have not won a match at the World Cup since beating Bulgaria in 1998 and they will hope to avoid falling at the first hurdle - a fate they suffered in both 2002 and 2010.
Despite losing both their opening group games in South Africa four years ago, the Super Eagles still had the chance to reach the last 16 by beating South Korea in their final game, but they were held to a 2-2 draw and finished bottom of the group.
Brazil 2014 will be Nigeria's fifth appearance at a World Cup finals.
Their best outings at the tournament were in 1994 and 1998 when they reached the knockout round of 16.

N1million bet placed on Ram fights in Lagos

N1million bet placed on Ram fights in Lagos

About N1 million, is at stake at the ongoing Best of the Season Ram Championship at Jalisco Sports Centre, Bolade, Oshodi, Lagos.

This is the sixth edition of the gaming event.

Over 100 rams would contest in the two-week long championship which began on Sunday and would end on September 1.

An official of the Ram Sports Promoters Association of Nigeria, RSPAN, who pleaded anonymity, said on Monday in Lagos that the championship was aimed primarily at picking out the strongest ram. He also said that the competition is a celebration of “our cultural heritage as practised by our forefathers.”

“Ram charging is a cultural sport that has existed for a long time but is (now) being used by people for betting purposes in order to generate money. Ram fighting is one of our cultural heritages that our forefathers practised but they did not have a legitimate body governing the coordination of their sport,” he said.

The official added that the strongest rams at the Lagos zonal competition would compete in the National Rams Championships, scheduled for January 2014, also in Lagos.

“Ram owners from the 33 zones in the West, which comprises Lagos, Oyo, Ogun, Osun and Kwara, assemble their rams for the annual event,” he explained.

According to the official, RSPAN was formed six years ago in order to properly manage ram competitions and prove to the public that the animals used in the sport are being monitored.

“The association over the years has been able to generate competitions and make it known to the public that the fighting rams, referred to as gladiators are safe,’’ he said.

He stated that the association discouraged any form of unofficial betting within the premises of the competition in order to create orderliness and reduce fighting among fans during the competition.

Another official of the body said that the competition explained that fights are overseen by three match officials to further control and reduce the occurrence of injuries on the rams.

“We have the ram monitor, ram referee and ram marshal who jointly help to properly station the rams and conduct their charges in order to minimise injuries to the head of the participating rams.

“These rams can charge at a speed of 50 km an hour and collide with a force that can literary crush a human’s skull like an egg,’’ he said .

He said that the rams, naturally equipped with horns to resist such pressure can make over 30 charges at fight which he said made the fights interesting to watch.
